Winifred Brown Dills

Winifred Brown Dills, 79, of Sylva, NC transitioned to heaven on March 4^th, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Dills.

Winnie was a native of Jackson County most of her life. She was born in Buncombe County in 1943 to her parents Kenneth and Ethel Brown. Winnie and Jerry had three daughters, Lisa and Sean Barr of Gainesville, GA. Stephanie and Todd Baucom of Cullowhee, and Glenice and Craig Roberts of Asheville. Winnie had nine grandchildren, one grandchild in heaven and 4 great-grandchildren.

Winnie was the sister to Darrell Brown who is deceased, Tommy Brown of Salt Lake City and Barbara Long of Sylva.

Winnie also had 6 special nieces who were like daughters to her as well.

Winnie was a graduate of Cullowhee High School in 1962 and attended Western Carolina University. She worked for GTE/Contel as an operator, repair clerk, and service representative prior to the office closing. She went to work for the Jackson County Emergency Management office as a dispatch officer in 1994.

Winnie also assisted her husband Jerry in several of their joint businesses within the community. She also helped establish the rental properties they owned in Dillsboro. In these areas of business Winnie became close friends with the people she served near and far and continued those relationships until death.

She enjoyed many hobbies from playing the piano at church on occasion and weddings, gardening and a member of the Garden Club to making ceramics with some of her friends. She was an avid bird lover and enjoyed her time in the outdoors watching the hummingbirds in season from her porch swing.

Her all time love was the UNC Chapel Hill Men’s Basketball Games. She would know all the players names and backgrounds and watched every game decked out in all her Tar Heel gear. A special trip with her daughters to attend a game in person a few years ago was a special memory for her.

Winnie was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in the Webster Community.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 pm Friday March 10, 2023 in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with the Revs. Ernie Jamison and Craig Roberts officiating
The family will be receiving friends Friday from 1:00 pm till 2:00 prior to the Service at the Funeral Home.
