William Rogers Shelton Sr. 98 of the Qualla Community passed from this life on Sunday, September 30th, 2018. He was the husband of the late Rita Cabe Shelton and the son of the late Crawford and Lucy Shelton.
He was a member of Whittier United Methodist Church where he served for many years on the church council. He owned and operated the first Dairy Queen in Cherokee for many years. He was the owner and operator of Green Acres Farm and Cottages in Qualla. Rogers was also a livestock and tobacco farmer. He was very active in Jackson County, having served on the Jackson County School Board, SCC Foundation Board of Directors and the NC State School Board of Directors. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy during WWII.
He is survived by one daughter Drucilla Shelton Russell (Barry) of Whittier; a son, William Rogers Shelton, Jr. (Sabrina) of Whittier; five grandchildren, Susan Tamaera Laney (Chad), William Rogers Shelton III, Samuel Crawford Shelton, Morton Calloway Shelton and Thomas Cabe Shelton. He also had one great grandchild, Emily Laney. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by one daughter Diane Filiak Crisp and one brother Harry Crawford.
A memorial service will be held Friday October 5th at 11 AM at Whittier United Methodist Church with Rev. David Baxter officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11 AM at the church prior to the service.
