William Douglas Davis
William Douglas Davis, 92, died Friday, April 14, 2017, at Blue Ridge on the Mountain in Sylva, NC.
Doug Davis was born at home in the small community of Emma near Asheville NC. His parents were the late Roy J. Davis and the late Myrtle Quakenbush Davis Smith. He attended Mars Hill Junior College until he was drafted into World War II. After his discharge from the Army, he entered Western Carolina Teachers College. Upon graduation from Western, he decided to travel out of state to further his education. He received a Masters Degree and a Doctor of Education Degree from Columbia University in New York City. For ten years, Doug was on the faculty in the Physical Education Department at Queens College. In 1966, he decided to come home to his beloved mountains and accepted a position as Dean of Men at Western Carolina College. In 1992, Dr. Davis retired from Western Carolina University as Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Student Development. During part of his tenure at Western, from 1974 to 1992, he was chairman of the annual Mountain Heritage Day celebration. He continued as chairman for another two years after his retirement.
Surviving are his wife Angela of Cullowhee; two daughters Terrie Minnier (Michael) and Lee Kennedy (Robert); a grandson Christopher Minnier and a granddaughter Katya Kennedy; all of Pennsylvania. Doug is also survived by his sister Barbara Davis Bennett of Mars Hill NC.
