On November 1st, 2024, a mountain soul and a true legacy of a woman, Wanda Lou Brooks affectionally known as “Nanny” gained her heavenly angel wings surrounded by her family. Nanny was born April 3rd, 1946. She was a lifetime resident of Sylva, North Carolina. She is preceded in death by her Husband, Allen Brooks, her parents Emma Viola Buchanan & James Gudger Buchanan, one sister Martha Elizabeth Buchanan, five brothers Vernon Wilkes Buchanan, Carol James Buchanan, Ronald Williams Buchanan, Charles Gordon Buchanan, and Harold Dean Buchanan.
Nanny is survived by her two sons Marty (Vickie) Brooks, Keith (Jerri Ann) Brooks, one daughter Tessa Brooks (James Ledford). She has one surviving brother Lowell (Linda) Buchanan, and three sisters Barbara Cabe, Stella (Orville) Cabe Wike, and Audrey Sue Jones. She leaves behind her grandchildren Thomas Nicholson, Denise Nichol (Ernest) Franks, Elizabeth (Jared) Gibbs, Emily (Scottie) Marr, Allen (Scotti) Brooks, and Chelsea (Justin) Ball, her great grandchildren, Rebecca Baliey Franks, Cameron Allen Marr, Luke Autzen Marr, and Nova Rae, her two dogs Callie and Bruno.
To have known Nanny was a true privilege. She knew everything there was to know about running a chainsaw, canning, and gardening. The woman could out log any man. In the spring and summer, you would find her in her garden and in her flower bed. She enjoyed spending time with her family. If she wasn’t in the garden, she was bear hunting with her kids and grandchildren. Nanny was a member of the Greens Creek Baptist Church. After she stopped working for Clark and logging, she retired from Zickgraf in Franklin, NC.
“Momma, in our lives we’ve known some good and bad. We’ve been happy and we’ve seen sad. We’ve each had our problems to work through and with each of us you’ve said, “My prayers are with you.”
When we were young, we may not have known that you would watch over us, even when you were grown. You’ve listened and talked with us; you gave us your love and your trust. Doing your best to help us out, you’ve always been there, without a doubt. From our first skinned knee to our first child, we’ve needed your support through many trials, so in return we want you to know, You Mean the World To Us!”
Love your Children!
