Tony V. Childress of Sylva, NC died on July 5 at the age of 59. Tony was born in Sylva, NC on August 26, 1959, the 5th of six children to Mickie (Comer) Childress and James B. Childress.
Tony was the happiest fishing the rivers of WNC, especially the Tuckaseegee, gardening, watching Braves baseball or reading anything he could get his hands on. Tony also had a love of writing, but he treasured most spending time with his family and friends. Tony will always be remembered for his gentle spirit, kindness and generosity. Tony was the decades-long voice of WRGC Radio, the host of Anything Goes and a longtime announcer for WCU Catamount Baseball
Tony was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Mickie Childress; step-daughter, Amanda Childress; brother Ronnie Childress; and nephew, Tyler Stockman. Tony is survived by his step-daughter, Natasha Childress; brother, Kim Childress; and sisters, Kathy Appleton (Jack), Suzanne Childress (Shannon) and Lisa Childress. Tony is also survived by his sister-in-law Carla Stockman (Bruce); nephews, Greg Childress (Elizabeth), Chad Childress (Chanda), Chris Appleton (Annie), Austin Appleton (Eva), Kirk Childress (Ashley); and niece, Kelly Childress.
