Syrilda Smith, 96, of Sylva, NC went home to be with her Lord, Wednesday, March 5, 2014.
A resident of Jackson County for most of her life, Syrilda was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Joseph H. Smith, her parents, James Hampton and Essie Hampton Casey, one sister, Ada, six brothers, Kenneth, Collis, Andrew, James, Frank and Robert, one step-sister, Sue and nine step-brothers, Henry, Estus, LeRoy, John, Verlin, James, Clifford, Lyndon and Fred. She was a retired teacher and librarian of Jackson County School System, a member of Liberty Baptist Church and a member of Chapter 416B Eastern Star.
Syrilda is survived by her daughter Marjorie Herbert, Sylva, a special "D'oice" (daughter by choice) Lisa Whan of Sylva, one grand-daughter, four grandsons, one great-granddaughter, and nine great-grandsons.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 12, 2014 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Appalachian Funeral Services. A going-home celebration, officiated by Rev. Charles Lee and Dr. Charles Mosley, will be held Thursday, March 13, 2014, 2 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church, with burial immediately following at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
