Steven Carter Jones

Steven C. Jones, age 51, of Sylva died Tuesday, December 4, 2012. Steve was born in Haywood County on February 14, 1961. He is the son of the late Walter and the late Elizabeth (Hervey) Jones. He was associate superintendent of Jackson County Schools. Steve graduated from Sylva-Webster in 1979 and began working as a teacher assistant at Sylva-Webster High School in 1980. Before graduating high school, Steve worked as a student bus driver for Jackson County Schools. Steve attended Southwestern Community College and went on to Western Carolina University, graduating in 1987 with a special education degree and became a special education teacher for Jackson County Schools. He taught in several area schools, including Smoky Mountain High, Smokey Mountain Elementary, and Blue Ridge. He achieved his Master's in School Administration from WCU in 1999. In 2000 he became assistant principal of Blue Ridge and Scotts Creek Schools. In 2005, Steve became Director of School Improvement for Jackson County School, becoming assistant superintendent in 2008, and associate superintendent in 2011. Steve represented Jackson County Schools for the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Loves Chapel Presbyterian Church of Waynesville. Steve is survived by his wife: Eva Ward Jones; sons Steven Jacob Jones, and Isaac Riggs Jones; three special sons Kevin and Josh Jones; and William A. Patrick Howell; two brothers Mark Jones of Cashiers, and Jeff Jones of Sylva; and one sister Allison Anne and Andy Lassiter and daughter Sarah of Smithfield, NC. A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, December 8, 2012 in Myers Auditorium on the campus of Southwestern Community College. Rev. Robert Fernandez will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am in the auditorium prior to the service. Burial will be in Keener Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Patrick McCoy, Keith Broome, Matthew Cook, Brett Farley, Michael Morgan, Travis Foster, Bryan Bumgarner, and Ethan Fortner.
