Ruth Hill passed away after a prolonged illness Saturday, June 18, at her home in Sylva surrounded by her family. Born May 2, 1946 in Sylva, N.C., to the late Bessie Mills Cabe and William Norman, Ruth was also preceded in death by her father who raised her Claude Cabe and her beloved sister Gloria Ann Laramie.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 50 years James Lee Hill; three sons Jimmy Lee Hill (Cristal), John Hill (Melissa), and Jerry Hill (Janice); seven grandchildren Mary Deitz, Addison, Anna Ruth, Danner, Wyatt, Joe Bryant, and Sarah Mae Hill all of Sylva; and nephew Harold Laramie, Jr of Ohio.
Momma Hill loved her boys and their friends as her own. For many years she attended all Sylva-Webster and Smoky Mountain sporting events and could be heard ringing her cowbell. She enjoyed all her grandchildren's events making sure their parents were raising them right. As a graduate of Sylva-Webster High School, Ruth continued her school spirit by supporting the Athletic Booster Club to the extent that in 2003 she was awarded a patron award by the Jackson County Athletic Hall of Fame for her years of service to Jackson County athletes.
The funeral will be held 2:00 pm on Tuesday, June 21, at Appalachian Funeral Services, Sylva, NC., with visitation at 1:00 pm. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Sylva.
