Roger T. Battle, 69, of Whittier, passed away Sunday September 15, 2013. A native of Jackson County he was the son of the late Earl Thomas and Hilda Howell Battle. A graduate of Swain County High School, he was known for supporting his local community. He owned and operated Smokemont Riding Stables for over 30 years, in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Along with his father, he was co-owner of Qualla Supermarket and Qualla Five and Dime. As a young man he volunteered with the Cherokee Fire and Rescue Squads. He was a member of Whittier United Methodist Church. He loved camping, hunting, horseback riding and spending a lot of time at the lake with his friends.
He is survived by
1 son- Mark Battle and his wife Grace of Marietta, GA
2 daughters- Kim Albritton and husband James of Sylva,
Shawna Riordan and husband Robert of Whitter.
8 Grandchildren- Colin Lyons, Alex Battle, Meggan Riordan, William Battle, Makayla Riordan, Cameron Lyons, Monica Riordan and Berkley Albritton.
1sister- Brenda Shook and husband James of Whittier
Nephew- Critton Shook
And his beloved Pepper also survives.
A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday September 18, 2013 in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with the Rev Bennette Crisp officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 Noon till 2:00 PM prior to the Service at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Thomas Memorial Cemetery in Qualla
