Robert Howard Dowis Jr, 82, of Concord, NC, and formerly of Wilmington and Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2012. He was born July 23, 1930, in Morven, NC Anson County and was the son of Robert Howard Dowis Sr and Naomi Lowry Dowis of Asheville, NC. He graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School and served abroad in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1948 to 1952. He returned to Asheville, NC where he completed his degree in Accounting/Business Administration from Blanton Business College. He worked as an Accounting Controller at Olin Matheson Corporation in Brevard NC, U.S. Industries in Salisbury NC and Presant Corporation near Wilmington NC. He was a Free Mason and enjoyed volunteering his time in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Wilmington NC and where he served as local Commander for two years. Mr. Dowis was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 55 years, Stella Revis Dowis of Concord, Wilmington and Sylva, NC. He is survived by his son, Scott Howard Dowis of Concord NC; daughter Lisa Dowis Blackmore and son-in-law Timothy Blackmore of Swansea IL; granddaughter Lisa Tess Blackmore and great-grandson, Sylas David Perez of St. Louis MO. He is also survived by his brother, Charles S. Dowis, and sister-in-law Gail Y. Dowis of Charlotte NC and nieces Margaret Richards of Cary NC, Deborah Agee of Williamsburg VA, and nephew Cheney Dowis of Charlotte NC. Visitation will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, December 26, at Appalachian Funeral Services in Sylva NC followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM. Revs. Ronnie Branson and Mike Farmer officiating.
