John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Peter Namotka, 98, gained his angel wings on February 19, 2025, in his home in Dillsboro surrounded by loved ones. Peter was born in Duryea, PA on February 24, 1926, to Peter Namotka and Elizabeth Konyak. He passed four days short of his 99 th birthday after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife Delores Namotka. Both were parishioners of St. Mary’s since 2001.

He is survived by his children, Mary (and husband Klaus), Rose, Paul, and Vic (and wife JoJo); seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, three brothers, several nieces and nephews, all of whom he cherished deeply.

Peter enlisted in the navy in his senior year of high school. He was a World War II navy veteran. After an honorable discharge, he was a fence builder and then became an ironworker. He met his wife Dolores in a park one afternoon and it was love at first sight. They were married sixty years.

He volunteered throughout his life serving once as an auxiliary policeman. In his spare time, Peter enjoyed gardening, playing scratch off tickets, working around his home, baking, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and helping whoever he could. Often at weddings you would find him on the dance floor doing the polka. Whenever anyone asked Peter for help, he never hesitated saying Yes. He shared, he cared, and he gave.

Having lived through the depression he was very thrifty. Although he’d eagerly share his money with those in need, he was a man of simple means. Before buying any item, he’d search every store for the best price. Car salesman would eagerly make the deal just to stop the price dickering.

Peter was a devout catholic who loved the Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary with all his heart. He loved his church family at St. Mary’s and felt so comforted after returning from mass. Many people who met him felt an instant connection. He created a calming, caring feeling for anyone around him. His biggest accomplishment in life was touching so many people with his love, sincerity, trustworthiness, respect, genuineness, laughter, and kindness.

A memorial service will be held at St Mary’s church in Sylva, NC on February 24, 2025, at 9:30 AM.

The family wishes to thank his many providers, Four Seasons, Messino Cancer Center, Dr. Tanksley, Dr. Peterson, Dr. Austin, Dr. Tammy Johnston, Dr. O’Malley, and Dr. Zivony who provided the best medical care with love and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Mary’s church community outreach in Sylva, NC or St. Jude’s hospital in Peter’s memory.
