DR. PAUL GARY WHITE: Late of Sylva, North Carolina died on August 10 at Four Season's Elizabeth House, Flat Rock, North Carolina after a very brief illness. He was 74.
Dr. White was born in Topeka, Kansas but grew up in Monrovia, California. He served for five years in the US Navy on the USS St. Paul.
After leaving the Navy, he continued his education at Fresno State University in California where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He later went on to receive his PhD from the University of Denver.
Dr. White taught at North Adams State College and later joined the faculty of Western Carolina University (WCU) in 1974 teaching Earth Sciences for thirty-one years. During this period, he worked for three years in Nepal with USAID. He retired from WCU in May 2005.
Gary enjoyed traveling, photography, listening to music, reading and Sudoku.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-eight years, Marion Pryce-White, sister Nancy of Cambria, CA; brother Dennis of Morro Bay, CA and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at home on Saturday, August 19th from 4:00 – 6:00pm.
