Ovid Ray Jones, 93, of Easley, SC, died peacefully at home with his family on Friday, September 15, 2017.
A native of Sylva, NC, he was the son of the late Frank B. and Nina Parris Jones. He retired from Duke Power Company after many years as a heavy-equipment operator.
Ray was a member of First Baptist Church of Easley where he belonged to the Cleveland-McCall Sunday School Class and the Prayer Ministry.
Ray was part of the greatest generation, serving his country during World War II. He was on active duty from 1942-45 in the Pacific theatre in the Navy on board the USS Hornet aircraft carrier. He was quietly proud of his status as a decorated veteran, and his time in service and the men with whom he served were life-long inspirations.
Surviving are his wife of sixty years, June O’Dell Jones, of the home; a son, Dr. David Jones of Easley; two daughters, Denna J. Callahan (William) of Greenville, and Patti J. Jacks (Gerald) of Pickens; and granddaughter, Mallory Jacks, also of Pickens. He is also survived by his brother, Marion Jones (Wanda) of Sylva.
In addition to his parents, Ray was predeceased by his brother, Allen F. Jones, a sister, Portia M. Jones, and a sister-in-law, Betty Jones.
Funeral services are 2:30 p.m. Monday, September 18, 2017 at Easley First Baptist Church, with the Reverend Dr. John Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery, Easley. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. in the church narthex, prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church (“For Generations to Come” fund), 300 East 1st Ave., Easley, SC 29640. Flowers will be accepted.
