Milton Russell Wofford of Sylva, NC passed away on July 6th, 2013. Milt was born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 23rd, 1936, where he lived in addition to Washington, DC and Giessen, Germany before graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1958. As a cadet there, Milt led the parade of all four service branches at the Internment of the Unknown Soldiers from the Second World War and the Korean War on Memorial Day, 1958. Milt went on to serve in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC, and served tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam. Upon completion of his military service, Milt lived in Fayetteville, NC and worked at Ft. Bragg until his retirement in 1999. Milt held positions on the Fayetteville City Council and the Board of Directors of the Fayetteville Public Works Commission. Milt loved fly fishing on the Tuckasegee River and relocated to Sylva in 2004 to pursue this endeavor full time.
Milt is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lauren Wofford. Milt is survived by Lucy, his wife of 53 years; their three children Russell, David, and Ann and their spouses Dori, Beth and Darrin; seven wonderful grandchildren; and his brother Hoke Smith Wofford, Jr.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 18 Jackson Street, Sylva, NC 28779 on Thursday July 11th at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate his life. An additional service will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
