Mildred Buchanan Haskett, 92, formerly of Sylva, died on Thursday, 11/29 after a period of declining health. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late William Tyler and Vilanta Blanton Buchanan. Born in 1926 on what is now Buchanan Loop, she was the youngest of eleven children. She graduated from Webster High School in 1945 and soon moved to Washington DC to work as a secretary for the U.S. Gov't Accounting Office and the Federal Aviation Admin. In 1965, she returned to Jackson County with her husband to make their home in the Fairview Community. She did secretarial work for Fairview Elementary School until her retirement. She enjoyed road trips and traveled across the country. She especially enjoyed beach trips and Branson, MO. For many years, she was a devoted and dedicated caregiver for several of her elderly siblings. Her determination, commitment and love was shown most clearly by her duty and care of family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Charles Vernon Haskett, four brothers and four sisters and numerous nephews and nieces. She is survived by one sister, Hilda Buchanan McGinnis, of Oak Hill, VA and numerous nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces. The family will receive friends on Friday December 7th at 1 p.m. at Lovedale Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will immediately follow services at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
