Throughout his life, Michael had an accomplished career at NCDOT where he served as a supervisor before retiring. His commitment to his work and professionalism earned him the respect of his colleagues.
Outside of his career, Michael had a diverse set of hobbies and interests. Music was a significant part of his life, and he passionately played the guitar in several bands for over 40 years. His skills as a guitarist were unparalleled, bringing joy and entertainment to audiences wherever he performed. Additionally, Michael found solace and relaxation in fishing. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed spending time in nature while reflecting on life's simple pleasures.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ruth Hooper Wilkes, as well as his brother, Jim Wilkes.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gloria Gay Wilkes, who stood by his side through thick and thin. Their enduring love and bond were an inspiring example to all who knew them. Michael is also survived by his devoted son, Marty Wilkes and daughter-in-law Diana, who brought immense joy to his life. His sister, Robin Abernathy holds dear the memories they shared throughout their lives together. Lastly, Michael's granddaughter Olivia Wilkes brought great happiness into his later years.
Michael Grayson Wilkes will be remembered for many things: as a dedicated professional in the field of transportation, as a talented guitarist who shared his passion for music with others, as an avid fisherman who found peace by the water, and most importantly, as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a music education program in Michael's memory. This gesture would honor his love for music and support future generations in pursuing their own musical aspirations.
A memorial service to celebrate Michael's life will be held on a date to be announced.
