Melvin Barnes

Melvin Barnes, age 61, of Sylva, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Mission Memorial Campus, of Asheville. Melvin was born May 4,1955 in Jackson County and is the son of the late Willie Barnes and the late Dena Coggins Barnes.

He was retired from Jackson County as a maintenance crew supervisor. He was a member of Trout Creek Baptist Church. Although he was a man of few words, he loved life and having fun with family and friends. He loved draft horses and the Lord Jesus Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a stepson; Jimmy Howell

He is survived by his wife; Kathryn Long Barnes: two stepsons; David Howell and Greyson Hayes: one son; Seth Barnes: one daughter; Lanae Barnes; and one granddaughter. He is also survived by three brothers; Felix Barnes, Larry Barnes, and Bruce Barnes.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 5, 2016 at Appalachian Funeral Services in Sylva at 1:00 pm with Rev. Mark Stiles officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Shook Cemetery.
