Mrs. Elizabeth Hope Reed, 95, passed away April 10, 2016 at Givens Estates where she had resided for the past ten years. A native of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Mrs. Reed was the daughter of the late Francis Earle and Mary B. Hope. She is survived by her nephew, Bill Mitchell and his wife Ebbie of Pawleys Island, SC and niece, Brenda Sellers of Sylva, NC. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Venoy Reed and sister, Frances Mitchell and her husband, Walter.
Mrs. Reed graduated from Winthrop University with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in 1941 and her master's degree in 1951. She taught home economics at Almond High School in Almond, NC beginning in 1941 and worked as a home demonstration agent in Abbeville County, SC beginning in 1946. She married Mr. Reed June 2, 1946 and spent the majority of her career, teaching home economics in Jackson County, NC. Mrs. Reed served as Vice President (1982-1984) and President (1984-1986) for the Jackson County Chapter of North Carolina Retired School Personnel. Mrs. Reed was a Red Cross volunteer and in 1990, she was honored by receiving the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Services.
Mrs. Reed established the Elizabeth Hope Reed Fellows Endowed Fund at Winthrop University in 2009. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship funds to deserving students that will allow them to achieve high academic and service-oriented goals.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the First Methodist Church in Sylva, NC where Mrs. Reed was a member for many years. The reverend Mike Shuford will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am before the service. Committal services will be immediately after the service at the Old Field Cemetery. Appalachian Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
