Mary Frances Sutton Knight, age 91, of Sylva, passed away Thursday, February 7, 2013 at Morning Star Assisted Living Center. A native of Jackson County, Mary was born November 15, 1921. She is the daughter of the late Allen S. and the late Ethel (Snyder) Sutton.
Mary graduated Western Carolina University in 1942 with a degree in education, and completed her Master’s degree in 1963. She taught at Sylva High School; in Swain County; and in Dillsboro, before going to Scotts Creek in 1951, and retiring in 1979. Mary enjoyed arts and craft projects, traveling, church work, and completing projects through the Jackson County Extension Homemakers.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Knight, in 1994; two sisters, Kate Israel and Bernita Ledbetter, and two brothers, Bill and Guy Sutton.
She is survived by a son, Ray Knight, and wife Libby of Sylva; a grandson, Darryn Knight, and wife Mandie of Sylva; a great grandson, Dallas Knight; nephews Tom Ledbetter Ken Henke, Rob and John Sutton; nieces Jackie Ledbetter, Linda Frye, Anne Bembry, and Kathy Farmer; and a sister-in-law, Wanda Sutton.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 9 at Appalachian Funeral Services, 165 Skyland Drive, Sylva, NC with Rev. Rich Peoples and Rev. J. D. Grant officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 pm prior to the service. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Sylva. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Benevolent Fund of Grace Community Church, PO Box 2093, Sylva, NC 28779.
