Mary Ida Blanton Garrett, 88, of Sylva passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Memorial Campus in Asheville, NC. Mary was born February 8, 1925 in Jackson County. She is the daughter of the late Charles Ode and Bonnie (Mills) Cope and was preceded by her husband’s Thomas Garrett and Von L. Blanton; three sisters and two brothers and a son Von Michael Blanton. Mary retired from Buster Brown Textiles and served time in the military during WWII and worked part time for Hollifield Jewelers in Sylva. Mary was a member of the Ochre Hill Baptist Church where she served in the Choir a class secretary and pulpit committees.
She is survived by one daughter Dr. Sheila B. and Wayne King of Virginia, a daughter in law Dorothy Blanton and grandsons Mark and Heather Blanton; Jeff and Jessica Blanton all of Greenville, SC, Sean Quinn of Tucson, AZ, and one granddaughter Saxony Miller of Starke, FL.

Sisters; Dorothy Freeman of Hickory, NC; Sue Felkins of Joplin, MO. and Joyce Plemmons of Clinton, TN.
Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, July 25 in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with the Revs. Earl Holden and J.D. Grant officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens in Sylva.
In Lieu of flowers memorials are requested to the Building Fund at Ochre Hill Baptist Church 5059 US 74 East Sylva, NC 28779.
