Mary Louise Armistead

Mary Louise Young Armistead entered God's eternal rest on Monday, March 3, 2025. Mary was 97 years old and stretched every moment of life in this world as long as possible.

She was born on February 13, 1928, in Decatur GA and was the daughter of Doley Lloyd Young and Mary Emma Tribble Young. She loved her family and made friends everywhere she went. Her passions were gardening, travel, entertaining friends, and keeping her husband, John Beauchamp Armistead, on track through his career at Sears & Roebuck. They were married on July 20, 1949 in Decatur, GA and enjoyed 54 years of marriage. They met at the SAE Fraternity House at GA Tech and were avid Tech fans their whole lives.

She also loved taking care of grandchildren Christopher Armistead, Kevin Armistead, and Amy Federman. She had a close relationship with her niece, Brenda Jane Maddox as well as her nephews. Mary spent most of her life in Atlanta, GA. After her husband died in 2004, she spent 17 years with her daughter Kelie Federman and her husband Fred in Marblehead, MA and her final 2 years with her son Michael Armistead and his wife, Gina, in Cashiers, NC. Her eldest son is John B. Armistead Jr. of Dallas, TX.

Mary is predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sister Bettye Hazelrigs and her husband Burton of Atlanta.

She lived during the Roaring 20's, the Great Depression, World War II, the post-war boom, and more. She was a life-long Presbyterian and long-time member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. She was President of the Magnolia Garden Club and served on the Board of Directors at the Sheltering Arms Nursery, both in Atlanta. Mary loved gardening into her 90's, and won many awards through the years for flower arranging. She was loved by many other nephews and nieces on the Armistead side of the family.

A memorial service will be held for Mary at Community Bible Church in Highlands, NC on March 15, 2025 at 2:00 PM. She will be buried at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, GA following a graveside service on April 12, 2025 at 2:00 PM.
