Martha Emeline Popplewell, 97,of Sylva, died Saturday, May 5 at Crescent View Retirement Community. Mrs. Popplewell was born August 13, 1914 in Sylva. She is the youngest and only living child of the late James Walton and Amanda Caroline Cope of Sylva. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Beckham Popplewell; brothers, Vernon, Grayson, and Homer Cope, of Sylva and Verlon Lee Cope of Bryson City; and sisters, Carrie Wilson and Rhoda Watson, both of Sylva.
She graduated from Asheville Teacher's College and taught in several Jackson County schools. In later years she was a substitute teacher. She was a wonderful homemaker who loved, not only family, but everyone she knew. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, sewing, and walking. Martha was a faithful member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church where she taught children's Sunday School for many years.
She is survived by her daughters, Verna Kay Shuler and husband, Tony, of Arden and Susie Cooper of Sylva, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 pm on Monday, May 7, at Appalachian Funeral Services of Sylva, with funeral services at 11 am Tuesday, May 8 at Scotts Creek Baptist Church. Dr. Randy Sherron and Rev. Johnnie Lee will officiate. Burial will be in Old Field Cemetery, Sylva.
