Margaret (Peggy) McCall Spilker, died suddenly on Monday, March 28, 2016 at the age of 80 at her home in Cullowhee, NC. Peggy was born in Florence, SC in 1935. She was the only child of J.D. McCall Jr. and Vivian Jones McCall. She grew up in Columbia, SC and received her Bachelor's degree in Physical Education at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC. She then went to get her Master's Degree in Physical Education at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Peggy shared a class with Otto Spilker from St Louis Missouri. They graduated in 1958 and married. Two years later they had a daughter, Margaret. Then they moved to McComb, Illinois where their daughter, Naomi was born. Naomi is now married to Randy Ramsey. Peggy and Otto would travel through NC often and loved the mountains so much that they settled in Cullowhee in 1962. And then four years later their daughter, Vivian was born. Peggy loved the outdoors. She liked hiking, fishing, tennis, running, and just enjoying the outdoors and nature. She enjoyed watching all of the woodland creatures and spending time with her much loved cats. Bird-watching was another favorite activity. She worked at City Lights Bookstore for many years. She enjoyed getting to know the many customers who came into the store. Books were a large part of her life. She was an avid reader. She enjoyed her book club friends, her Wednesday ladies lunch group, her neighbors, and her Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church friends. The Spilker family would like to thank the first responders and all medical personnel for their caring professionalism and for all of the love and support from the friends in the community during this time. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 10th from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Softball picnic field near the track at Western Carolina University. In case of rain, the memorial will be held at Reid Gym, also on the WCU campus near the University Center Clock Tower. In Lieu of flowers, please give to our local ARF, Catman2, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, or The Otto H. Spilker Scholarship Fund at WCU.
