Lloyd Owen, 92, of Whittier, NC passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017. Born January 4, 1925 in Jackson County to the late Frank and Annie Owen. After graduating from Sylva High School, he worked in New Port News, VA at a ship yard and became a Merchant Marine delivering supplies for WWII. He then joined the United States Army and after his enlistment he joined and became a North Carolina State Highway Patrol. He spent a couple years in Vietnam with the Army Corp of Engineers helping build road ways and air ways. Later in life he moved back home to help take care of his mother and father and to help tend to the family farm.
Lloyd is survived by two brothers Lester Owen of Sylva, NC and Robert Owen (Polly) of Whittier, NC. One niece Margaret Owen Cogdill of Sylva, NC; two nephews Kenneth Lee (Buddy) Owen (Susan) of Dillsboro, NC and Mike Owen (Cathy) of Charlotte, NC; one great nephew Matthew Owen (Jennifer) of Charlotte, NC; one great niece Amanda Owen Houston (Mike) of Harrisonburg, VA and three great-great nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 11:00 pm at Appalachian Funeral Services. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Thomas Memorial Cemetery.
