Leroy Frederick Jackson, 69, of Sylva, passed away Monday evening October 23, 2017
A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Leroy and Minnie Jo Bryson Jackson.
A member of Liberty Baptist Church, he was a trustee of the Church as well as Head Usher and member of the Church choir. Leroy was one of the first African-Americans to integrate Sylva-Webster High School and was a member of the State Championship Football team in 1966. He then served in Viet-Nam and was a U.S.Army Veteran. Leroy was also a member of the NAACP and was Director for the Asheville Parks and Recreation as well as being very active in civic organizations. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by 3 of his sisters; Mary Frances, Emma Jean and Marilyn.
He is survived by
2 Sons- Shelley Bryson of Canton
Justin (Chelsea) Jackson of Black Mountain
Very close friend- Diane Jackson of Black Mountain
Sister- Odessa Burston of Douglasville, GA
And numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles also survive.
A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday October 28 at Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Lee officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 till 2:00 prior to the Service at the Church. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Liberty Baptist Church, PO Box 2134, Sylva, NC 28779
