L D Queen, age 86, of 216 Purple Mountain Rd., Sylva died Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Medwest Harris of Sylva, NC. Mr. Queen was born May 7, 1925 in Sylva, NC. He is the son of the late William McKinley (Ken) and the late Lola (Wiggins) Queen.
He served in the Navy during World War II. He was employed for 25 years as a carpenter for General Tire. He was a member of the Sylva Lions Club and a member of the Sylva First Baptist Church. He as a member of the William B. Dillard American Legion Post of the VFW 104, and a lifetime member of the Gastonia VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lola and William Queen; his maternal grandparents Laura and Cleveland Wiggins; his paternal grandparents Texie and Lawson Queen; his sisters Ella Mae Smith and Evelyn Ammons; and his brothers, William E. Queen, Von L. Queen and Alvin M. Queen.
He is survived by his wife, Sara(Street) Queen; sisters Annetta Q. Caldwell of Gastonia and Betty Q.Dellinger of Bessemer City; brothers Vernon and Glenda Queen of Gastonia, and Billy and Margaret Queen of Kyles Ford, TN. The funeral will be held at the First Baptist Church in Sylva at 3:00 pm on Monday May 23, with a visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Reverend John Bunn or Bill Henderson will officiate, and members of his Sunday school class will serve as pall bearers.
A second funeral will be held in the Garver Baptist Church on North Modena Street in Gastonia on Tuesday, May 24 at 2:00 pm, with a visitation at the church an hour prior to the service. Reverend David Steward will officiate and burial will be in the Gaston Memorial Park. L D's nephews in Gastonia will be the pall bearers for the funeral and burial.
