Johnny Kay Sluder, born on December 27, 1942 in Hazelwood, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at Mission Hospital on April 9, 2025. A devoted family man and a proud veteran, Johnny's life was marked by dedication, service and a love for the outdoors.
After graduating from Sylva-Webster High School in 1964, Johnny served his country with distinction in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era. His commitment to service carried into his professional life, where he retired from Verizon after many successful years.
Johnny had a passion for the great outdoors. He thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing, often sharing these pursuits with family and friends. An avid motorcycle enthusiast, he found immense joy in riding his Harley. One of his proudest moments was watching his granddaughter, KayLeigh Jean Ammons play softball, a testament to his unwavering support and love for his family.
In 1968, Johnny married his beloved wife, Robbie Hall Sluder, with whom he shared a profound bond and partnership throughout their lives together. He is survived by their daughter, Aimee Ammons, son-in-law Tim Ammons and his granddaughter KayLeigh Jean Ammons. Johnny was also cherished by his two sisters, Peggy Bryson, Audrey Ann Jones and her husband Dave as well as his brother, Tommy Sluder and his wife Barbara.
His family expanded with multiple nieces, including Teresa Jones Bowels and Tonia Sluder and nephews Michael Jones, Eric Jones, Craig Bryson and Jason Bryson, all of whom adored him and will carry his memory forward.
Johnny is preceded in death by his father, Ervin Ransom Sluder, his mother, Louretta Ensley Sluder and his brother-in-law Forrest Bryson. His legacy of love, loyalty and the joy of living will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family will hold a receiving of friends on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 1230pm at Appalachian Funeral Services. A funeral service will follow at 2pm with internment to be at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Sylva, NC with military honors.
