Mr. John A. (Johnny) Buchanan, age 68 of Sylva passed away on Monday October 30, 2017 at home with family and friends by his side. The son of Adam Buchanan and the late Laura Mae Buchanan, he was born in Sylva on July 23rd, 1949.
Mr. Buchanan served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era. He was a lifetime active member of AM-Vets and a Lifetime member of DVA Post. A service of remembrance and celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, November 2nd at 3:00 p.m.in the chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with the Revs. Shane Roughton, Eddie Stillwell and Emery Brooks officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Old Savannah Cemetery.
Following his military service he found himself running different routes for Sunshine Cookies, Flav-o-Rich milk and he had a Little Debbie distributorship for more than 25 years. Johnny truly loved dirt track racing and loved taking his family and friends with him when he was racing. He was known as the "Snack Cake Bandit #19". He was a member of New Savannah Baptist Church for much of his life. He loved his family and friends and those that knew him will miss him very much. He was an active member of the Romeo Club at McDonalds.
Johnny leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend of forty-six years Linda Buchanan of the home; two daughters, Amanda Justice and husband Michael Joe of Sylva, and Ameka Cole and husband Robert of Sylva; a brother, Doyle Buchanan and wife Vickie of Sylva; three grandchildren, Hunter Cole, Haylen Cole and Darcie Justice; sister-in-laws, Sandy Frizzell (Scottie) and Shirley Buchanan. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
