Jane Locke Brown
Jane L. Brown of Cullowhee moved on to another challenge on Friday October 8. Jane's indomitable spirit fought breast cancer and her spirit prevailed until her body gave out.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina she was the daughter of the late Clara Brown and the little sister of Russell Brown. Her loving grandparents were Lucille and Paul Cooper of Columbia. Her connection with her hometown never wained. She was a diehard gamecocks fan, always insisting on calling her alma mater "Carolina."
Jane never met a challenge she would turn down. She attended Eau Claire High School in Columbia, received a degree in biology from the University of South Carolina, and attended graduate school at Tulane in New Orleans. Moving forward she spent a number of years as a medical technician in South Carolina, Texas, and North Carolina. One day she wanted a new challenge which became a career in anthropology and teaching. Jane worked as a field archaeologist and worked in the archaeology lab at WCU. She took graduate courses in anthropology at WCU and Florida State. Jane completed a masters in history at WCU with a specialty in southeastern Indians.
Later she spent 10 years researching and co-editing The Payne-Butrick papers with William L. Anderson and Anne Rogers, published by the University of Nebraska Press. Undaunted Jane also taught anthropology for many years at WCU including archaeology field school and later developed a special focus on forensic anthropology.
After retirement, Jane indulged her unending passion for fishing, her favorite pastime! She worked on a project Jon boat never quite getting it up to her exacting standards. She skillfully carved laurel branches into decorative and functional hooks which were happily shared with friends. Her love of nature shone in her passion for the outdoors and her practice of planting and nurturing a variety of plants and trees at her home. She enjoyed pet sitting, especially special needs animals and made countless furry (and human) friends along the way.
Jane was preceded in death by her grandparents, her mother and one aunt. She is survived by her Aunt Jane Cooper, her brother Rusty Brown (Claire), Cousins Jane Marie Torre and Susan Torre Hoffler (John), her nephew Christopher Brown (Veronica), beloved nieces and nephew. Her loving and very blessed spouse, Dottie Brunette, is going to have to be patient until they can be together again... They enjoyed nearly 29 years of love which was blessed in their church and later were legally married in 2013. It was a good relationship. She leaves behind two fur babies, Squirt and Simon, both of whom adored her. The world of friends she leaves is enormous, to know her was to love her.
A private service for Jane Locke Brown will be held Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 at St. David's Episcopal Church. On Saturday, October 29 per Jane's request there will be a memorial service including a bonfire, pot luck and friendship fest at her home in Cullowhee.
