James Lee Evans, 63, of Whittier, passed away at his home, Sunday, September 13, 2015. He was born and raised in Bryson City, Swain County, NC. He later moved to Whittier, Jackson County, NC where he resided until his passing. James was the son of the late Harvey Pickens Evans and Vonnie Cabe Merritt. Preceding him in death were a half-sister, Shirley Higdon and three half-brothers, Charles, C.R. and Steven Merritt.
James worked at the Ela Saw Mill for many years. He, known to many as "Rambo", also worked at Harrah's Cherokee Casino before retiring from Con Met in Bryson City. In 1987 he married Delores Fawley, with whom he shared a son, Bryan James Evans of Wake Forest, NC; they were later divorced in 2003. In addition to being survived by his son, Bryan, James was the proud grandfather of Bryan's two sons, Ethan Evans and Christopher Hugelmairer of Wake Forest, NC and a half-sister, Judy Wiggins of Monroe, NC.
A per James' final wishes, he will be cremated and no services will be held. Appalachian Funeral Services and Crematorium of Sylva, will be assisting the family with all arrangements.
