Irona (Granny Dot) Nicholson, age 87, of Cullowhee, died Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Skyland Care Center. . Mrs. Nicholson was born July 14, 1928 in Jackson County. She is the daughter of the late Claude Estes and the late Roberta (Ashe) Brown. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Herbert V. Nicholson; her daughter, Melissa D. Nicholson; a son-in-law, Randy Galloway, and several brothers and sisters.
She worked as cook for Canada Elementary School where she was known as Granny Dot to everyone. She was a member of Promise Land Baptist Church, she loved to cook, sing gospel music, and spend time with family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter, Marlene (Bill) Lance of Brevard, a son-in-law, Andy Nicholson of Cullowhee; five grandchildren, Joel (Tina) Galloway, Karen (Jason) Cooper, Kellie (Jeff) Grinestaff, Amy Sellers, and Andrea Nicholson; eight great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a sister, Pauline (Bill) Broome, a brother, Vaughn (Colleen) Brown, and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at Appalachian Funeral Services on Thursday, January 28 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Larry Bryson and Rev. Ray Houston officiating. Burial will follow in the Promise Land Church Cemetery, Hwy 107, Tuckasegee. Dot's grandson and great grandsons will be pallbearers. The family will receive friends from noon until 2:00 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Appalachian Funeral Services to help with final expenses.
