Harrison "Harry" Powell entered into the heavenly place prepared by His Savior late Thursday, February 9. He endured a period of declining health in a manner that testified to the greatness of God, peace of Christ, and comfort of the Holy Spirit.
Harrison is survived by his wife of 47 years, Faye Carpenter Powell; his son David and wife Lindsey; grandchildren Laylin Joy, Noah Harrison, and Ally Faye; special niece and nephew Janet Brown and Bruce Carpenter; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws; nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.
Harrison was the son of the late Walter Powell and Anna Powell Pressley. He was preceded in death by his 7 siblings.
Life had a rough start for Harrison, due to circumstances beyond his control. However, by God’s grace, he was forged rather than defeated by life’s challenges and “finished well” in every regard – as a follower of Christ, husband, father, Papa, neighbor, and patriot.
Harrison spent much of his childhood growing up in Baptist Children’s Homes of NC. At 17, he was able to get his half-sister to sign for him to enlist early in the US Air Force where he served with great distinction until retirement.
Harrison was a “Renaissance” man, a life-long learner, who knew a lot about a lot of things. His grandchildren knew “Papa can fix it” whether it was a toy, computer, gun, or a house. He had a big heart, and his sense of humor was the epitome of dad jokes.
Harrison was a member of Webster Baptist Church, where he served in numerous capacities, including as a deacon.
Baptist Children’s Homes of NC was a ministry close to Harrison’s heart, and he was in the process of collecting “a mile of pennies” toward the care of children. In lieu of flowers, his family asks you to work together with them to multiply the positive difference that can be made in the lives of boys and girls. Contributions toward Harrison's “mile of pennies” can be made at his service or by mail to Baptist Children’s Homes of NC, PO Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361 (please include a note: in memory of Harrison Powell).
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, February 16, 1pm at Webster Baptist Church with the Reverends Scott Carter and Scott Courtney officiating. The US Air Force Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers. Harrison will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
