Harold Jimmy Carnes

Harold Jimmy Carnes, 76 of Whittier, entered fully into the presence of the Lord on Sunday, February 18, 2024. 

Born June 21, 1947, to the late Jesse Elbert and Edith Irene Buchanan Carnes, and was preceded in death by his loving parents and brother, Jesse Junior Carnes.

He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Married to Donnette Clouse Carnes for 54 years, they were blessed with two boys, Brian (Patricia) Carnes of Whittier, and Barry (Kelly) Carnes of Whittier; three grandchildren, Phoebe June Carnes, Jesse Logan Carnes, and Haley Sophie Carnes, all of Whittier, one brother and five sisters.

Jim graduated from Sylva Webster High School in 1965 and began working at Mead Corporation in Sylva before being drafted into the Army, and serving in Vietnam, where he was a Military Policeman. Jim was honorably discharged in 1972 and continued his long career of working at Champion/Evergreen Paper Mill in Waynesville until his retirement.

Jim had an overall love for the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter and had a passion of working in his wood pile, splitting, and stacking it for the next cold spell.

In remembrance of Jim’s life, a Service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, February 24, 2024, in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00pm – 2:00pm. Reverend Jared Stevens and Reverend Eugene Ridley will be officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens Cemetery. 

His contribution to his family and country as a U.S. Army Veteran will never be forgotten.

Pallbearers will be Bo Aiken, David Aiken, Jack Aiken, Roger Aiken, Lynn Jones, Mike Jones, Dike Sneed, Josh Carnes, Tim Sutton, Tommy Sutton, Guy Clouse, and Dale Clouse.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in Jim’s name to the Charles George Veteran’s Living Community Hospice Center in Asheville.
