Gertrude Mae Mashburn, age 93, of Dillsboro passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018. Mrs. Mashburn was born May 8, 1924 in Cherry Tree, PA. She was the wife of the late Carl Mashburn and the daughter of the late Walter and Lucy D. Collins.
She proudly served in the US Navy during World War II. She dearly loved her family.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers; Arthur Collins and Fred Collins.
She is survived by three daughters; Delores (the late Mack) Pittman of Smithfield, NC, Sandra (Kent) Thompson of Raleigh, NC, and Teresa (Dan) Vreeland of Dillsboro, NC and six grandchildren; Richard Howard, Melissa (Scott) Whiting, Meredith Howard, Sonya (Adam) Guthrie, Daniel (Melanie) Vreeland and Heather (Dell) Pittman. She is further survived by nine great grandchildren; Carlee Baker, Ava Baker, Shannon Smith, Daly Whiting, Evan Guthrie, Olivia Guthrie, Nathan Vreeland, Hannah Vreeland and Abby Grace Pittman, as well as one nephew and also nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, February 12th at Appalachian Funeral Services Chapel with Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Parris Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to American Legion Post 104, PO Box 104, Sylva, NC or to the VFW Post of their choice.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of the Skyland Care Center of Sylva for their devotion and care of their mother.
