Frank H. Buchanan, age 88, of Sylva died Monday, November 11, 2013. Frank was born October 2, 1925. A lifelong resident of Jackson County, he is the son of the late Samuel Coleman and the late Lola (Cabe) Buchanan. In addition of his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Mary B. Angle, Eula B. Rathburn, Bee B. Brown, Dee B. Gardner, and Ilah B. Guffey; brothers, Lyndon, Cecil, Jess and Kenneth C. Buchanan; sons-in-law, Dickie Carr and Larry Pressley.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Thompson Buchanan; a daughter, Gloria Jean Carr of Sylva; a son, Nicky Howard Buchanan and wife Melanie of Rock Hill, SC; a special son, Jerry McCall and wife Janet of Franklin; a grandson, Christopher Howard Pressley and wife, Jen; granddaughters, Jennifer P. Kelly and husband Jason, Lindsay M. McConnell, Cristen Carr, Cathy C. Hubbard and husband, Jerry; great grandchildren, Graham, Katie, Melody, Savannah, Sarah, Grace, Emma, Sydney, and Alex; a sister-in-law, Mae W. Buchanan; and several nieces and nephews with a special thank you to Cecilia B. Morgan and Sam Buchanan.
When Frank was in high school, the principal called him to the office and presented him with a high school diploma and induction orders for the army. A veteran of WWII, he served throughout Europe prior to the end of the war and the Battle of the Bulge and then with the occupation forces. He returned to school in Kentucky and then came back to Jackson County to work in the family brick laying business. He and his brothers did free brick laying for numerous churches and community buildings throughout Jackson and Macon County.
Frank worked part-time at Southwestern Community College before going to the L.B. Johnson Job Corp for 10 years before his retirement. He enjoyed traveling and made numerous trips around the country, visiting almost all states. He loved woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Sat. Nov. 16 at 12:00 noon at the Wesleyanna United Methodist Church in the Savannah Community, with the Rev. Charles Jackson and Rev. Loy Kennedy officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until the beginning of the service.
