Fornes Gene "Doc" Fortner, 76, of Dillsboro, passed away Monday, February 26, 2018 after a period of declining health. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Willie Arthur and Mindora Broom Fortner.
Doc's life was characterized by hard work, responsibility and perseverance, things he attributed to working on the family farm with his 11 siblings. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. He was considered by many to be a master gardener. Doc believed that just living was not enough; you must have sunshine, freedom and pretty flowers. For Doc, flowers were like medicine for the soul- they made people happier and healthier. He retired from a professional career in landscaping, plantscaping and tree service.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Jean Cunningham Fortner, his son, Jeffrey Lee Fortner, his brothers; Junell, Odell and Furman Fortner and his sisters; Edith Quale and Maxine Fortner.
He is survived by;
3 Sons- Willie Joe Fortner and his wife Nikole of Cullowhee
Tilmon Gene Fortner of Dillsboro
David Lee Fortner and his wife Vel of Cullowhee
2 Daughters- Pat Queen and her husband Kenny of Cullowhee
Maxine Fortner of Sylva
11 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren
2 Brothers- Eddie Fortner of Sweet Home, Oregon, Tommy Fortner of Hayesville
5 Sisters- Betty Middleton of Sylva, Patsy Quayle of Portland, Oregon, Marlene Jones of Sylva, Linda Fortner of Cashiers and Susie English of Canada
22 nieces and nephews also survive.
A Graveside Service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday March 3 at Mathis Cemetery with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Tim Dillard officiating. The family will be receiving friends Friday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at Appalachian Funeral Services.
