Evelyn Tiny Hoxit

d. May 13, 2018

Evelyn Hoxit was the epitome of a southern Appalachian woman. Not unlike the mountains, she called home, Evelyn was rich with beauty. She had an understated grandeur, and like her beloved mountains, she too was mystical with a wild yet gentle spirit. In life, Evelyn's deft fingers worked miracles with woodcraft, flowers, and food. Her arms, unfailingly open, cradled babies and rocked the dying. Her eyes, never ceasing to invite a conversation, bore wisdom and grace, and her smile that could light up a dark night was quick to rise and slow to fall. In as much as Evelyn was as gentle as a spring rain, she could just as fast summon the thunder. She was a protector. Snakebite quick, she'd come to the defense of her children and grandchildren. Maybe the greatest compliment that could be posthumously paid to Evelyn would be to call her real. If anything Evelyn Hoxit was real, authentic, unique and abundantly so. Evelyn was pinto beans and starry nights, hot days in the garden and hotter days inside canning her goods. She was wildcrafting and loving, funny and smart. Her kind of intelligence was not learned in the confines of a classroom but on backroads, by sick beds, on church pews, and in the fields. Evelyn Hoxit's type is nearly gone in the southern Appalachian Mountains, and when she so fittingly bid farewell to friends and family on Mother's Day of this year, in exchange for her oft spoken of Heavenly home, Earth lost another good one, and another star fell in the mountains. Evelyn Tiny Hoxit came into this world March 4, 1949, and departed from it on May 13, 2018. She was the daughter of Elihue and Lemer Mills of the Moses Creek Community. Evelyn is preceded in death by her father and mother, two brothers Manuel Mills and Roy Mills and a sister Opal Bryson. She is survived by her husband Paul Hoxit three children Pauletta Clark (Gregg), Loretta Womack (Jeff), and James Hoxit (Elsie). She has two sisters Helen Snyder and Diane Shook. Her grandchildren are Sara Cabe (Brandon), Sam Plaster (Mica), Erika Brooks, Cody Hoxit, Aaron Brooks (Michaela), Jake Hoxit, Shade Clark, Evangeline Womack, Jonathan Williamson, Diamond Burch, Mandy Nashif, Boone Williamson. She also had nine great-grandchildren and many loved nieces and nephews. Evelyn requested no flowers be sent on her behalf, but instead, use the money to do something with your family or to a good cause. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 19th at her Son, James' home.
