Edith Nicholson, (known as Big Mama to friends and family alike), age 82, of Norton Road, Cashiers went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 after a period of declining health. Mrs. Nicholson was born in Jackson County on October 29, 1928 . She is the daughter of the late Hobart Erickson and the late Bertha (Massingale) Moses and grew up in the Tuckasegee area. She was preceded in death by her husband of thirty two years, Andrew Nicholson. She was a member of Hamburg Church in Glenville and volunteered at the thrift shop. She loved gardening and tending to her flowers. She lived in Brevard from 1959 until she moved to Cashiers in 1982. She worked in Belks of Brevard for many years, then worked at Carolina Mountain Bank in Cashiers.
She is survived by a son, Arnold Nicholson and a daughter, Cheryl Ann Owen, both of Cashiers; a brother, Clarence Moses of Asheville; five sisters: Nita Broom of Concrete, Washington, Willene Beck and Elsa Whittermore, both of Brevard, NC; Donna Coggins of Asheville, and Wanda Owen of Tuckasegee, two grandchildren: Derek Owen of Chapel Hill, Tarah NIcholson of Cashiers; and one great-grandchild, Riley Nicholson, also of Cashiers.
The family will receive friends at Hamburg Baptist Church in Glenville on Friday, October 7, 2011 from 6 until 8 pm. Her funeral will be at Hamburg Baptist Church on Saturday, October 8 at 2:00 pm. The Reverends Matt Ledbetter and Johnny Norris will officiate.
