Dr. Laura Coffey

Laura Lee Denton Coffey, PhD, 76, of Webster and Biltmore Lake, NC passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, December 23, 2021. Laura was born on July 15, 1945 in Hudson, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents Richard and Myrtle Denton, and her sister, Marlene Walker.

Laura is survived by her family, whom she deeply loved; her husband of 54 years, Dr. Jerry Coffey; her children Jennifer Coffey Frady, her husband Jason Frady; William Coffey, his wife Shelly Coffey; grandchildren Jase, Gracie, Gavin, And Gable Frady; and those special to her that she cherished as her own, special daughter Chimene Mathis, her husband Chas Mathis, and grandson Colton Mathis. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as many dear neighborhood friends, lifelong friends, and professional colleagues.

Laura obtained her undergraduate degree in psychology from Hanover College and then earned her Masters and Doctorate from Indiana State University. She provided psychological services throughout the communities of WNC since 1970. Together with her husband, they formed Sylva Clinical Psychology in 1984.

In addition to her professional career, Laura found happiness working in her flower garden and taking care of her English Cocker Spaniels. She was a member of the Episcopal Church where she volunteered with the flower guild. She also loved making her famous cookies and pies for family, and friends.

Further, Laura enjoyed her time taking family vacations around the country including trips to concerts, National Parks, camping along the coast, and their annual trip to the Indianapolis 500. Having a deep love for her family, Laura worked to make each member successful by offering her advice and support. She also wanted the same success and happiness for the communities that she called home as evidenced through the love, and wisdom that she freely shared.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 28th beginning at 11:00 A.M at Appalachian Funeral Services, Sylva NC; visitation with the family will proceed the service and will begin at 10:00 A.M. Interment will occur immediately following the service at Stillwell Cemetery in Webster NC
