"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints" (Psalm 116)
Cherry Miller Martin of Cullowhee, NC, was called to her heavenly home on Thursday, April 18, 2019. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2012, she unwaveringly maintained her sweet spirit and steadfast faith throughout the course of her illness. Cherry was born in Sanford, FL on August 19, 1953. She leaves behind her husband and best friend of over 30 years, Bill Martin, also of Cullowhee, NC and her daughter, Ariana Martin; mother, Patty White; and brother, David Miller (wife Jan); along with numerous nieces and nephews. Cherry was preceded in death by her father, Gus Miller.
Cherry's life shone with the inner beauty of a quiet, gentle spirit. Her heart was always turned lovingly toward her home. She supported her husband in every way and remained a best friend and faithful guide to her daughter. She was selfless in serving and sacrificing all for the good of her small family. She truly lived Christ's commands in Luke 10, verse 27, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and your neighbor as yourself," sharing this love with everyone whose life she touched.
For many years she prepared for WCU students full-course, home-cooked meals each week for group Bible studies hosted in her home. She previously directed the Cullowhee branch of the Smokey Mountain Pregnancy Care Center. When diagnosed with cancer, she resolved to start writing a blog to aid others in their cancer journey (strengthinthelord.wordpress.com is still available for viewing). While in remission, she volunteered at her infusion center in Asheville, hoping to be a comfort for others enduring the same difficult treatments.
Cherry enjoyed reading (especially morning devotions), spending time with family and friends, journaling, horseback riding, birdwatching, playing the hammered dulcimer, traveling, gardening and being outdoors, experiencing good food, and making and sending cards to bring smiles to others.
Her work on earth is now complete and her treasures are stored in heaven. We were blessed to have her for a short time. She taught us that, because we do not know how long we have on earth, we should daily cherish life, ponder the truths of Scripture, love fervently, have a heart for others, and look for the beauty around us, realizing that it is not accidental or coincidental, but a reflection of God.
A memorial service for Cherry will be held at Appalachian Funeral Services in Sylva, NC, on Saturday, April 27th, at 2 p.m.. Visitation will be from 1 - 2 p.m.. Burial will follow the service at the Tuckasegee Baptist Church Cemetery.
