Charlie Sebastian Cabe, 89, of Sylva, North Carolina passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 1, 2020.
A life-long resident of Jackson County, Charlie was born in the Savannah community on April 19, 1930 to parents, Lindon Sebastian and Hattie (Rickman) Cabe. The Cabe’s and the Rickman’s linages are traced backed to the early 1700’s in both Macon and Jackson counties.
A veteran with the United States Air Force during the Korean War, Charlie served as a medic with the 5th Medical Group and was stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and received a National Defense Service Medal. He later worked as a highway inspector and retired from the Department of Transportation’s 14th division in 1993.
Along with spending time with his beloved family, he enjoyed wearing his overalls and working in his garden, cooking, playing cards, working word search puzzles, watching professional baseball and old television Westerns. He was also known for his great sense of humor.
Charlie is survived by his loving and devoted wife of nearly 64 years, June (Phillips) Cabe of Caney Fork and their 8 children: Kathy McGuire (David), Donna Carpenter (Bob), Sue Dills (Terry), Michael Cabe, Mickey Cabe (Teresa), Pam Myers (Charlie), Paul Cabe, Janet Cabe, all of Jackson County. He was a proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Leona Oma McMahan of Sylva.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, and 9 siblings: Edwina Cabe, Ardell Edwin Cabe, Jessie & Bessie Cabe (twins), Minnie Bell Cabe, John Lindon Cabe, Hazel Cabe, James Roy Cabe and Burton Lyle Cabe.
The family will have a celebration of life memorial service on his birthday, Sunday, April 19, 2020 with the Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. Appalachian Funeral Services are overseeing arrangements. www.appalachianfuneralservices.com
