Charles Ted Hillon of Cullowhee was born in Charlotte on the 16th of November 1935 to Ted and Lizzie Mae Hillon. He graduated from Belmont Abbey College in 1956, then worked for the US Commerce Department and attended Georgetown University before being drafted into the US Army. After completing his service in Okinawa, he returned home to Charlotte, married Naomi Cox, then moved to Roanoke for work with HJ Heinz and later Allstate Insurance. Volunteer service gave him much enjoyment throughout the rest of his life. He served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 18 in Vinton, VA and later for Troops 924 and 1833 in Haymarket, VA. Adventures included backpacking at Philmont, New Mexico and at Goshen Scout Reservation, VA. He was also a volunteer trail worker in the National Parks and Forest Service for more than thirty years, primarily for the Appalachian Trail, Shenandoah National Park, and Manassas Battlefield Park.
Charles passed away on the 11th of January 2025 in Sylva. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Naomi Cox Hillon of Cullowhee; son David and wife Yasuyo of Arlington, VA; son Mark and wife Yue of Cullowhee; and brother-in-law Roy Cox and wife Peggy of Sanford, NC.
