Betty Hurst Cowan, daughter of the late Thelma and Charlie Hurst, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 with the surrounding love of her children by her side. Betty and the late Royston Duffield Cowan moved to East Fork in 1957 where they were members of the East Fork Baptist Church. Betty loved baking, having family cookouts by the creek and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was the heart of the family and will be greatly missed by all. Betty is preceded in death by her husband Royston Duffield Cowan Jr. and her sister, Sue Hurst Noland. She is survived by her five children; Ricky Cowan, Teresa Cowan Carpenter, Kathy Cowan, Mandy Cowan Hooper and Duffy Cowan, eight grandchildren; Kristy Garrett, Shea Carpenter White, Stacy Cowan, Tamrick Cowan Mull, Tiffanie Garrett Worley, Dakota Cowan, Spencer Cowan, Chelsea Cowan and nine great grandchildren. One sister, Patsy Castle as well as one nephew, Perry Noland. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 13, 2013 at 6:30 pm in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Appalachian Funeral Services, 165 Skyland Drive, Sylva, NC to help with the funeral expenses. . .
