Bessie Lou Brooks

Bessie McMahan Brooks of the Barkers Creek Community went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 22, 2021. She was born December 31, 1938 to the late Adam and Emma Lee McMahan of the Greens Creek Community and was the wife of the late Eulas Brooks who passed away on June 16, 1989. 

She was a member of Rockdale Baptist Church. Bessie worked in the textile industry at both Sylco and Ashley Company, both in Sylva. She enjoyed her flowers, walking, and loved her community friends. Bessie dearly loved her family. 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by an infant son who was born in 1959 and two sisters; Addie Henson and Robbie McMahan who passed away as a child. 

Bessie is survived by one son; Gary (Debbie) Brooks of Tuckasegee and two daughters; Karen (David) Monteith of Sylva and Pam (Scott) Moody of the Barkers Creek Community. She is also survived by four grandsons; Jeremy (Beth) Brooks, Jacob (Amanda) Brooks, Brandon (Marissa) Monteith, and Zachary Moody, three granddaughters; Megan (Zach) Sorrells, Emily (Jordan) Cash, and Kaitlyn Moody, and eight great grandchildren. Two sisters; Rebeckah Wheatley and Docia (John) McGaha and one brother; Tom McMahan also survive. 

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Appalachian Funeral Services Chapel in Sylva, NC. Rev. Larry Nations, Rev. Mark Stiles, and Rev. Bobby Downs will officiate. Burial will follow in the Greens Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
