Baxter Norton

Baxter Norton, age 79, of Sylva died Friday, January 31, 2014, at his home in Sylva. Mr. Norton was born January 1, 1935 in Scotland County, NC. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Maude Ballard Norton. He was preceded in death by brothers Alton, Tebe, Marshall, and Armon Norton. Baxter was an avid gardener. Baxter received an Associate of Arts degree from Campbell College; Bachelor of Arts in Education from University of North Carolina; Master of Arts from Appalachian State Teachers College, and Master of Arts from Louisiana State University. He was a retired mathematics professor from Western Carolina University. He is survived by his wife Marie (Hensley) Norton ; two sons Ethan of Sylva and Clement of Savannah, Georgia; two grandsons Derek and Patrick Norton, and two brothers; Bill and Ervin of Laurel Hill, NC. Sisters Betty Lou Williams, Emma Carter, and Janette Sessoms of Laurel Hill, NC, Lawrine Howie of Charlotte, NC, and Mary Langley of Pine Hurst, NC.
