Audrey J. Tritt, 81, of Sylva died Sunday, December 3, 2017, surrounded by family at the Skyland Care Center. Audrey was a Sylva native born on April 10, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Wilma Jones. Audrey was a graduate of Sylva High School and the Western Carolina Teachers College, earning both a Bachelors and Masters degree. Audrey retired from Sylva-Webster/Smoky Mountain High School in 1993 after 30 years as a teacher and counselor. Following her retirement, Audrey served on the Board of Commissioners in the town of Sylva, the Jackson County Board of Social Services, the American Legion Auxiliary in Sylva, and was a member and Chaplain for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Glenville. In 2013, Audrey was honored with “The Order of the Mountain Laurel” award in recognition of her commitment and work for the people of Jackson County. Audrey was a lifelong member of the Sylva First United Methodist Church. While living in Cashiers, she attended the First United Methodist Church and was active in church activities.
Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Morrow Lee Tritt, Sr., and one brother, Walter Allison Jones. She is survived by a brother, Edward Lee (Sue) Jones, of the Glenville community, and four children: a son, Morrow Lee (Nan) Tritt, Jr., of Sylva; three daughters: Beverly (Jose) Barron, of Somerset Kentucky; Debbie (Mike) Bell, of Creedmoor, NC; and Laura Allen, of Arden, NC. Audrey is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Skyland Care Center for their outstanding and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Sylva or Cashiers/Glenville Volunteer Fire Departments.
Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, December 6, 2017, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services. A funeral service will immediately follow with the Reverends Eddie Stillwell and Shane Danner officiating.
