Alma Phillips Henson, 89, of the Caney Fork Community in Jackson County, passed away peacefully May 6, 2014 at Skyland Care Rest Center after a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of Thomas Luther and Catherine Coward Phillips. She was married to Alvin Waye Henson who passed away in 1997. She was very active in the Caney Fork CDC for 60 years and very active in her Church. She retired from AK Hinds University Center at WCU.
She is survived by her children; Thomas and his wife Eloise, Wiley and his wife Judy and Kareen and her husband Steve Ogle. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and a sister Leila Borg of Florida.
A Service of Celebration will be held Saturday, May 10 at Appalachian Funeral Services starting at 12:00 noon conducted by Rev. Dennis Burrell. Visitation will be from 10:00 until 11:30 am at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to either The Brasstown Cemetery Trust Fund c/o Sherry Hooper, 94 Winnipeg Lane, Sylva, NC 28779 or to The Lower Coward Cemetery Trust Fund c/o Brenda Dillard, PO Box 313, Webster, NC 28788.
