A C (Gib) Gibson passed away at Golden Living Center in Greensboro, NC on April 19, 2016 at the age of 92. A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Frank Gibson and the late Pearlie Elders. Having left school after the 8th grade to help support his family, he worked varied jobs including a stint in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He volunteered for the Army during WWII, seeing action in North Africa and Italy. After the war, he reenlisted, this time in the Army Air Core, serving with the occupation forces in Japan, where he finished his high school education. Choosing to go into the newly created Air Force in the late 1940's, he continued to serve until his retirement in 1962. As a civilian he made a second career in the U.S. Postal Service, in Riverhead NY, retiring in 1988, whereupon he returned to Sylva with his wife, the late Mildred Gibson, and two of his sons. His interests included hunting, fishing and horse racing. While living in NY he and his wife served for a time as foster parents for several children. Over the years their generosity made a difference in the lives of many people. Known also for his love of children and dogs, his loyalty, and his keen sense of humor, he will be missed by those who knew him. He is survived by his sons, Ernest Fox of Las Vegas, Stephen Gibson and his wife Arlene of Speonk NY, Gregory Gibson of Greensboro NC, and Thomas Gibson also of Greensboro NC, four grand children Jason Gibson of Mastic Beach NY, Katherine Gibson of Gulfport MS, Brian Embry of Orlando FL, and Sara Gibson of Reno NV.
