Jason Aaron Mathes, age 30, of Yellow Mountain, Cullowhee passed away Friday, June 1, 2012 at Highland Cashiers Hospital. Jason was born October 11, 1981 in Asheville, NC. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Grace (Nanny) Whitt and Carvel Whitt; paternal great-grandparents, Steve and Golen (Mamaw ) Rice. He is the son of Brent and Debi (Whitt) Buchanan, Johnny Mathes, Sr. and Karen Farmer, and stepmother, Lora Mathes.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Brittany(Stewart) Mathes; daughter Makaila Mathes; sons, Colton, Logan, and Noah Mathes, all of the home; a brother, Johnny Mathes, Jr. of Leicester, NC; paternal grandmother, Mary Mathes of Asheville; niece Taylor Mathes; nephew Austin Mathes; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Jason loved to cook, a trait he inherited form his Nanny Whitt. He loved NASCAR racing, riding ATVs, and was an avid fisherman. He was employed by Signal Ridge Marina in Glenville, NC.
Jason had an infectious smile and was loved by everyone he met.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 5 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services, Sylva, with the Rev. Shane Silvers and Rev. Scotty Patrick officiating. Visitation will be Monday June 4, from 6 until 8 pm at Appalachian. Burial will be in Clark's Chapel Cemetery, Weaverville, NC. An online registry is available at www.appalachianfuneralservices.com.
